San Antonio Living History

Educational Outreach

The San Antonio Living History Association (SALHA) is committed to making living history educationally relevant and impactful for Texas students and the broader community. To achieve this, SALHA aligns its presentations and programs with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards, as required for Texas History students in grades K through 12. Additionally, SALHA incorporates elements of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) into its programs to further enrich the learning experience.

Our educational outreach aims to develop teaching programs that are interactive, open-ended, and result in memorable stories and activities that are both visual and tactile. These living history programs can be set up indoors or outdoors, providing flexibility for different learning environments. The development of History Trunks and Pop-Up Museums is also planned as part of our outreach, offering hands-on resources and immersive experiences for students and teachers.

Living History in the Classroom

In both classroom and historic site settings, SALHA encourages the use of storytelling about documented historic personas who were present at significant events. This technique increases understanding and helps students and public audiences relate to these individuals and their circumstances, fostering greater interest in the historical events being described.

Support for Educators

SALHA supports educators by providing historically researched resources for developing historical personas to use in their classrooms. Educators are also invited to participate in our professional development (CPE) courses, which offer guidance on incorporating living history and experiential learning into their teaching. These resources and training opportunities help teachers engage students in critical thinking, historical research, and immersive learning experiences that bring Texas history to life.

Educator Membership

As part of SALHA's educational outreach, Educator membership invitations are extended to Social Studies teachers and education administrators who want to consider introducing living history interpretation as an experiential learning experience in their classrooms. These methods have been found to encourage students to learn about research that uncovers the documented stories of the historical personas identified in TEKS-aligned curricula.

SALHA is also offering a teacher professional development (CPE) course to our Educator members and other teachers who are interested in the educational objectives of the San Antonio Living History Association. SALHA educators will form an Education Advisory Committee for SALHA.
