About Us

The San Antonio Living History Association (SALHA) is an educational 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich history and cultural heritage of San Antonio and Texas. SALHA provides members with historical learning resources for use in classrooms and at public events, and welcomes living history interpreters, social studies teachers, students, and community supporters interested in developing historical and cultural interpretive programs for residents, teachers, students, and heritage tourism audiences.

Our mission is to promote a better understanding of San Antonio's 300-year history and the diverse cultures that have shaped its world heritage status. We achieve this by using authentic period skills and living history interpretations that engage and encourage experiential learning in schools and at historic sites throughout San Antonio and Texas.

SALHA extends educational outreach to social studies teachers and educators who want to introduce living history and experiential learning into their classrooms. Engaging students in these methods fosters interest in historical research and critical thinking, and supports learning about historical personas in Texas history, as highlighted in TEKS-aligned curricula.

Living history interpretation is an experiential learning method that uses many presentation forms, including historical music, acting, dance, period skills, fashions, and documented storytelling. These activities expand local historical and cultural awareness and provide memorable, hands-on learning experiences for all ages.
